You’ve heard the expression, “you gotta crawl before you walk”. Well that’s absolutely the truth, especially when you’re feeling stuck, uninspired and completely emotionally deflated.
If you can relate to this emotional state, you gotta read this article to find out exactly why a concept I covered earlier really does work in helping you get out of your rut.
Your action is required on this, so I’m going to be pushing you out of your comfort zone. Don’t worry, we’re in this together and any motion forward is progress.
What you must incorporate in your ambitious dreams are Baby Steps! They are small and therefore over looked but I’m about to break it down for you so that you don’t skip this step ever again.
So, get comfy and get ready to absorb the 3 main reasons why Baby Steps actually work!
1. Momentum
So you’re tried everything but nothing you still haven’t reached your goal. You’re burned out and unmotivated. You are in a state of Spiritual Inertia. That is tough place to be. Physics tell us that inertia is
“the tendency for a body to resist acceleration; the tendency of a body at rest to remain at rest or of a body in a straight line motion to stay in motion in a straight line unless acted on by an outside force.” – (source),
This is great news for you. Sure that tells us that if you are sitting still you need an “outside force” to get yourself going again, but did you also peep how once you get moving in a direction you will continue moving in that direction? So how can that be applied to real life and what I am talking about here? This is exactly where Baby Steps come in. No matter what you have going or how stuck you feel, by simply taking one action towards your goal, you have taken yourself out of the stagnant state of non-motion, and you are now moving in a steady direction towards your goal. How exciting is that?! That is all you have to do! According to the definition of inertia, you act as your own “outside force” and you get yourself into steady motion. You are your own “outside force” that has the power to change your state from a “body resistant to acceleration” to a force that is steady moving towards it’s goal. Go you!!
2. Confidence Building
Now, take a look at yourself? Before, you were beat up by the world and out of steam, but now trusting the laws of physics you have taken the first (sometimes painful) step. How proud of yourself are you? I hope very proud, as how you feel about yourself is my second point. Baby Steps build Confidence. We have all been there, lethargic, sad, depressed and unmotivated because things aren’t working out the way we Dreamed. For dreamers and visionaries this can be excruciatingly painful. You put yourself out there, you announce your crazy plans to the world, you hold your ground in the face of naysayers…and then…nothing. Were they right? Were you wrong? Is this not your Destiny? These doubts for a Dreamer are scarier than Freddy Krueger showing up in your bedroom. Right? So, when you are able to pick yourself off, dust yourself off, and take action in the face of all of that pain and rejection, you feel like a million bucks! The action can be as small as sending an email, going outside or making a to do list. The importance at the Baby Step stage isn’t how big the move is, quite contrary, hence the name baby steps. Just the simple fact that you are able to once again move, is proof that you can face adversity, Spiritual Inertia and still keep going. If you recognize how amazing that is, and how strong that makes you, you’re bound to be filled with a sense of confidence, which will only propel you to continue taking small steps that will get you closer to your goal. Remember, if you never stop reaching for your goal you haven’t failed. Your ability to pick yourself up time and time again will build confidence in your ability overtime.
3. History doesn’t lie
Keep a journal, a folder online or some other way to track your success so when doubt creeps up you have proof you are a rock star. If you cohere with the Baby Steps method, you will find you have a long trail of successes and instances when you could have given up but you kept on going. During your low moments this is exactly the kind of hard evidence that you are going to need to keep yourself encouraged. When those voices, whether internal or external, tell you, you’re not capable of achieving your dream, just refer to your “baby steps log” and prove to yourself and the world that you are serious about realizing your dreams and walking in your destiny because history doesn’t lie!
I hope these points have helped your believe in the system of Baby Steps. Some days it’s all I can do is just inch forward, just to say I did “something” towards my goal. Trust, after a month, 3 months, a year, you will be pleased with your progress if you start incorporating using Baby Steps today.
